One of the oldest and most vibrant souqs in the whole region
Within the context of phase 1 of the Heart of Sharjah development project, geophysical surveys were completed and excavations started in the area between Al Hisn Fort and the Corniche, which revealed the foundations of the old souq that used to link the covered souq in the Mreijeh area to Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi souq in the Shwayheen area.
As a result, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, gave his instructions to reconstruct the souq on the old foundations that had been discovered. The reconstruction comes in line with the vision of the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) to develop Sharjah and its touristic and economic facilities. It was also decided to give the new development the old souq's name, Al Shanasiyah, a name which it had received due to the merchants from the state of Shanas who used to populate the souq. It is worth mentioning that Souq Al Shanasiyah used to be one of the oldest and most vibrant souqs in the whole region.
